What are the lessons that I need to learn- not head learn because I have done a great amount of head learning. I can tell you the basics of the lifestyles program that the Cardston Clinic.
How do I move that to the heart, soul, and body? Elder Robert Hales said something about loving others and, mostly loving yourself. This does not mean some kind of hedonistic attempt to find happiness. I think that it means understanding that the way to best do what is important to me is to have a healthy body, nourished spirit, and keen mind. In order to do this. I need to put myself first.
For whom do I need to do the work? For myself! When I make good choices to nourish myself in many ways. I think of the fate of Sisyphus and compare his journey with the stone to my goal of losing weight and becoming as healthy as I am capable of being.
Homer is said to have described the fate of Sisyphus as:
"And I saw Sisyphus at his endless task raising his prodigious stone with both his hands. With hands and feet he tried to roll it up to the top of the hill, but always, just before he could roll it over on to the other side, its weight would be too much for him, and the pitiless stone would come thundering down again on to the plain."
I get to a point where I have had some success at Lifestyles, and then the stone becomes too heavy to continue on its path. This takes me back to the question asked in the first sentence. What are the lessons that I need to learn in the deepest, heartfelt, whole body way?
Let me consider the supports that Lifestyles offers. We are allowed to meet regularly with a very knowledgeable, compassionate nurse who offers us to have personal accountability. There is a connection with the doctors who look at our a wide variety of tests and see if the numbers are improving as we become closer to our weight goals. We are asked to follow some very healthy eating guidelines. Keep a food journal which can be expanded further as we learn about why we eat when we are not hungry or otherwise sabotage our own progress. We are asked to walk at least 30 minutes a day and find other ways to strengthen our bodies.
Every Thursday morning there is a Strategy Group lead by Chris Sunderland and Lynda Tolman. We learn about management and support each other in both celebrations or failures. Chris says, "The proof is in the pudding."
I am failing. Why? What lessons do I need to learn?
